What is RWA in crypto?
Tokenized treasuries explained.
RWA is one of the biggest themes of 2025–2026: treasuries, gold and stocks are moving on-chain. It's real and growing — but most of it isn't open to ordinary users, and scams love the label.
What does RWA mean?
RWA stands for real-world assets. RWA tokenization records ownership of off-chain assets — government bonds, gold, stocks, real estate, private credit — as tokens on a blockchain.
| Type | Examples | Open to ordinary users? |
|---|---|---|
| Tokenized gold | XAUT, PAXG | Yes — OKX spot, region permitting |
| Tokenized treasuries | BUIDL, USYC, BENJI | Mostly qualified investors only |
| Tokenized stocks | US stock and ETF tokens | On some platforms, region-limited |
| Private credit | On-chain lending pools | High minimums, higher risk |

How tokenized treasuries work
A fund buys short-term US Treasury bills and issues tokens representing fund shares; holders earn roughly the T-bill yield.
- Size: about $12–15B in 2026, up from roughly $8.9B at the start of the year.
- Leaders: Circle's USYC (~$3.0B) and BlackRock's BUIDL (~$2.7B); USYC overtook BUIDL in early 2026.
- Use: institutions park idle stablecoins in tokenized T-bills to earn yield, then switch back when needed.
Most of these products are limited to qualified investors with high minimums. Ordinary users generally can't buy “real” tokenized treasuries on an exchange.

Where RWA is restricted
Rules differ widely. Some regions regulate tokenized securities like ordinary securities; others ban them. For example, a February 2026 notice from eight Chinese regulators prohibits onshore RWA tokenization in mainland China (except approved pilots on designated infrastructure) and bars offshore firms from serving mainland users.
Always confirm your local law first. We provide information only and never explain how to get around regional restrictions.
Five signs of an RWA scam
- Guaranteed high returns. Real tokenized treasuries pay close to T-bill rates; “20–30% APY” is a red flag.
- Referral tiers. Rewards for recruiting others is a Ponzi structure.
- Trapped in one app. No on-chain contract address, can't withdraw, not listed on any major exchange.
- Borrowed credibility. “Partnered with a big bank” or “licensed in Hong Kong” with no verifiable announcement.
- Pay a person. Legitimate platforms never ask you to send money to an individual or a “support agent”.
If any of these apply, walk away. If you've been scammed, keep records, report to local police, and ignore “recovery services” asking for fees.
A sensible way for beginners to explore RWA
- Learn stablecoins first — nearly all RWA settles in them, so practise depositing, swapping and withdrawing USDT and USDC.
- Start with the simplest RWA: gold tokens are the most accessible and transparent.
- Only consider products officially listed on major platforms, after reading the issuer, redemption terms and risks.
- Keep it small — don't overweight a portfolio just for a trend.
