What is a bitcoin ETF —
and should you buy one?
“ETF inflows” and “Strategy bought more” make headlines almost daily. Here's how institutions hold bitcoin, how to read the news, and which route makes sense for you.
What is a spot bitcoin ETF?
A spot bitcoin ETF is an exchange-listed fund that buys and custodies real bitcoin. You trade fund shares; the price follows bitcoin.
- January 2024: the SEC approved the first US spot bitcoin ETFs, with BlackRock, Fidelity and others launching together.
- How to buy: through a brokerage account, like a stock.
- Who buys: pensions, hedge funds, advisers' clients and others who can't or won't hold coins directly.

How to read bitcoin ETF flows in 2026
| When | What happened |
|---|---|
| H1 2026 | About $5.39B of net outflows; the hole reached ~$5.69B in July |
| August | Hashdex closed its spot bitcoin ETF with only ~$14.7M in assets; trading ended August 17 |
| Sep 15 | After a failed Senate cloture vote on the CLARITY Act, ETFs lost ~$450M in a day |
| Sep 21 | Nearly $1B of inflows — the best day since October 2025 |
| Week to Sep 26 | ~$2.39B of inflows, the biggest week of 2026; year-to-date flows turned positive (~$887M) |
Flows show institutional mood, not a trading signal. They often move with price but lag and reverse. Chasing a big inflow day is an easy way to buy a short-term top.

Strategy (MSTR) and bitcoin treasury companies
Bitcoin treasury companies are listed firms that hold bitcoin as their main reserve and keep raising money to buy more. The best known is Strategy (formerly MicroStrategy, MSTR).
- Holdings: about 845,000 BTC in mid-September 2026 — roughly 4% of supply.
- Premium gone: in June 2026 its market value fell below its bitcoin (mNAV under 1); by late September it was around 1.16×. The stock was down roughly 70% from its 2025 peak.
- Risk: these firms fund purchases with debt and preferred stock, so the shares usually fall harder than bitcoin and add company and financing risk.
mNAV = company market value ÷ value of its bitcoin. Above 1 is a premium, below 1 a discount. A high premium means paying more for the same bitcoin.

ETF, treasury stock or bitcoin itself?
- Hold long-term, already have a brokerage: a spot ETF is the low-effort option; watch fees and local rules.
- Buy in slices and rebalance: buy spot bitcoin on an exchange weekly or monthly, alongside gold tokens.
- Treasury stocks like MSTR: effectively leveraged bitcoin, even more volatile — not a core holding for beginners.
“Institutions are buying” doesn't mean “it will go up”. Institutions were net sellers for much of H1 2026 while bitcoin fell by half.

An exchange-listed fund that holds real bitcoin. You buy fund shares through a brokerage and the price follows bitcoin.

Not necessarily. Flows often move with price but lag and reverse. Treat them as a mood gauge, not a signal.
05What is Strategy (MSTR)?
A listed company holding about 845,000 BTC. Its stock tracks bitcoin but adds debt and financing risk, so it swings more.
06What does mNAV below 1 mean?
The company is worth less than its bitcoin — the market no longer pays a premium, typically when bitcoin falls and raising money gets harder.
